How a healthcare organization increased accessibility of fresh produce for low-income populations

CHALLENGE
Access to healthy, affordable food is one of the key determinants of health and remains a challenge in many of the low-income communities an Ohio-based client serves. Acknowledging the health effects of a poor diet, especially related to obesity, the organization looked to provide education and access to healthy food to its clients. BrandWell was challenged to manage a statewide sponsorship.
 
APPROACH
BrandWell created a unique member engagement and outreach event series for the organization in partnership with Produce Perks. Produce Perks is a regional nonprofit that provides a $1 for $1 match for SNAP customers to spend on healthy food at 70 farmers markets statewide. The goal of the event series was to increase member access to healthy affordable food. 
BrandWell coordinated event logistics, public relations and marketing outreach for the organization’s exclusive day at six farmers markets across the state in partnership with Produce Perks. At each market, members received additional money to spend at the market on fresh produce and participated in food sampling, health screenings, entertainment and raffles.
 
RESULTS
The event series raised awareness of healthy eating to hundreds of Ohioans. 
  • 473 members received $10 worth of vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables
  • 193 children received $1 vouchers
  • 53 New SNAP/EBT customers were tracked at the market dates
